Hunter’s Moon by Carolyn Holland

This was the Inaugural afternoon/evening bird walk at DEEC and attracted 14 birders including many new to DOS field trips to enjoy glorious Indian Summer weather. Highlights included great views of Bald Eagle, Great Egret, newly arrived Green-winged Teal, and resplendent male Red-winged Blackbirds showing their rusty feather edges while feasting on fresh wild rice grains hardly an arm’s length from the boardwalk. Marsh Wren was also heard calling from Markell trail but not seen in the waning light. A glorious Hunter’s Moon greeted the group on return to the parking area. This walk will become a recurring monthly event co-sponsored by DOS and the Delaware Nature Society so stay tuned for upcoming announcements. This is an easy walk and will be suitable for beginners as well, so share the word.
