October Meeting: “Here’s the latest poop on birds: What can we learn from our feathered friends’ feces?” by Dr. Jennifer Uehling
October 15 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Summary: : Though most people bemoan the presence of bird poop, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Dr. Jenny Uehling will explore what we can learn from bird feces, covering topics such as DNA sequencing to identify bird diet and microplastic identification and quantification. Understanding what birds are eating, and how it can expose them to potentially helpful nutrients or harmful pollutants, allows us to better understand the relationship between diet, survival, reproductive success, and bird declines.

Dr. Jenny Uehling is an assistant professor at West Chester University. She started at West Chester University as an assistant professor in Fall 2023. Before arriving at WCU, she received a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University in spring 2023 and my B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Chicago in 2015. A native of the Philadelphia area, she graduated from Springfield Township High School in Montgomery County. She am passionate about teaching, mentoring students in research, and making science accessible to everyone. When not pondering bird behavior or working with students, she enjoys running and eating ice cream. She is also a diehard Phillies fan!
