DESCRIPTION:Common Yellowthroat by Mary Braun \n\n\n\nThe marsh is alive with birdsongs!\n\n\n\nMarsh Wren by Carolyn Holland\n\n\n\nClose the week with an easy walk along the Jack A Markell Trail at the Peterson Refuge near the Wilmington Riverfront. At this time of year the marsh is alive with the songs of Redwings\, Common Yellowthroats and Marsh Wrens.  We will go for at least 2 hours and cover about 2 miles\, mostly on boardwalk with a bit of woodland trail thrown in. The sights and sounds of a freshwater marsh in evening are a great stress-reliever and will fortify you for the week ahead.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet by the Russell Peterson statue in the parking area for the DuPont Environmental Education Center. On this trip\, take a ferry ride to the island and see the rookery for yourself from the new viewing platform. Other expected species are Bald Eagles\, Osprey\, gulls\, terns\, and various shorebirds and songbirds.  \n\n\n\nAfter the walk has concluded\, you may feel free to explore Fort Delaware\, the Civil War-era fort on the island\, which is included in the cost of your ferry ticket! You might also consider packing a picnic lunch. \n\n\n\nFerry tickets can be purchased from the Delaware State Parks website. SUMMARY:May Meeting:  "Endothermy in the Air: Climate Change and the Challenges Birds Face Managing Body Temperature" by Dr. Don Powers
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Climate change creates conditions that push birds to their limits. Flying birds produce a large amount of internal heat\, and the way their feathers are positioned for aerodynamics makes it harder for them to get rid of that heat.  This is particularly true for hummingbirds\, which our speaker has spent a career studying.  This family\, already fascinating for their aerodynamic prowess\, display equally impressive behaviors to beat the heat.  Come and learn just how they do it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon Powers is Emeritus Professor of Biology at George Fox University and a recent transplant to Delaware.  He remains active in field research and the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students\, many of whom have successful academic careers.   For more than 40 years the primary focus of Dr. Powers’ research has been hummingbird energetics with specific emphases on thermoregulation\, total daily energy expenditure\, competition\, torpor\, dietary requirement\, and flight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting is held in person at Ashland Nature Center and is streamed online via YouTube Live. We are\, once again\, very grateful to our friends at Delaware Wildlands for opening up their space for us! Great birding from their beautiful new deck. \n\n\n\nThis year’s picnic features a food truck from Uncle John’s award-winning Barbeque. The menu includes vegetarian options. See the menu here. All food is provided free by DOS. The food truck will have soft drinks\, but you may want to bring your own if you prefer something else. SUMMARY:48th Annual Beginner's Shorebird Field Trip! ***Note change of date from 7/25***
DESCRIPTION:Shorebirds for Beginners at Bombay Hook!\n\n\n\nDelaware Ornithological Society (DOS) is sponsoring a Beginner’s Shorebird Field Trip on Saturday\, July 25th\, at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge\, Smyrna\, Delaware. This will be a Half Day trip – tailored for beginners\, and is the 48th consecutive outing for this popular field trip. “Par” is 15 species of shorebirds\, usually a challenging goal\, because arrival dates\, water levels and weather conditions all change year to year.  \n\n\n\nSpotted Sandpiper at Bear Swamp  by Carolyn Holland\n\n\n\nEmphasis is on basics of shorebird identification for beginners\, although there are always several experienced birders to assist. Pace is slow – everyone should see each shorebird species satisfactorily. While this is not a photography workshop\, our slow pace allows for photographic experimentation and networking. There will be some “prizes” awarded for categories not yet determined! Drinks and snacks advised\, as well as sunscreen\, bug spray and a hat. An optional\, informal tally luncheon is usually held following the trip at a local eatery.  \n\n\n\nRefuge fees are in effect – $4 per car\, or free entry with a 2024-2025 season duck stamp (or other special passes). This would be a fine opportunity to recycle your lightly used\, expired prior season duck stamp(s) – Donate it/them to support the DOS Bird-a-Thon!  \n\n\n\nTrip leader is Bob Rufe – rrufe1@aol.com – please email Bob to let him know you’re planning to participate\, or if you have any questions.  A few “loaner” binoculars will be available\, please contact leader to request if needed.More information on Bombay Hook NWR is available at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Bombay_Hook/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet in the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center parking lot in Smyrna\, DE at 8 a.m. and wrap up by noon.

SUMMARY:White Clay Creek State Park Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:Black-and-White Warbler by Chase Wilkinson \n\n\n\nJoin the survey! \n\n\n\nDelaware’s piedmont area is only 10% of the land mass\, but has the largest\, most diverse biodiversity in the state. The White Clay Creek State Park is the 4th highest ranked top birding spot in New Castle County and 49th largest Delaware area bird list by Cornell University’s eBird data base. This list is growing as more hours are spent birding the area. The purpose of this bird survey is to evaluate the avifauna potential in a systematic two-year study and add to the knowledge of the park.  The survey takes 3-4 hours and covers about 3 miles. The park was originally surveyed in 1976-1977 with weekly surveys over 24 months. SUMMARY:DOS September Meeting:  "Dowitcher Identification: How can two species be so hard!" by Dr. Michael C. Moore
DESCRIPTION:Summary: This talk will be held in person only at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science and will be held in the bird collection. There will be an opportunity to examine actual museum specimens of Dowitchers to see first hand the issues described in the talk. \n\n\n\nThe two Dowitcher species present one of the most difficult identification challenges among North American birds.  Both species occur in Delaware in good numbers.  Recent work has revealed several new identification criteria that will be covered in this talk as will some widely used field marks that are not as reliable as previously thought.  The goal is to increase your confidence in identifying these two species as well as learning when they are best left as Dowitcher sp. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michael Moore is a past president of DOS and a retired Biology Professor.  He earned his doctorate at the University of Washington in Seattle and was on the Faculty at Arizona State University for almost 30 years before moving to the University of Delaware in 2011 and then retiring in 2020.  He has published over 100 scientific papers on reptiles\, birds and dragonflies.  He has been a passionate birder for 50 years and enjoys chasing rarities and working through identification challenges.  He is currently the chair of the Publications Committee for DOS.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting is held IN PERSON ONLY at Delaware Museum of Nature and Science. The in person meeting is open to everyone and admission is free.  The presentation will involve looking at actual museum specimens of the birds discussed\, so cannot be live streamed.  Please come out and enjoy this unique hands on experience.

SUMMARY:Middle Run Natural Area--Smith Mill Road with Will Krohn
DESCRIPTION:Blue-headed Vireo at Middle Run Natural Area–Smith Mill Road by Will Krohn \n\n\n\nThe Smith Mill Road section of Middle Run Natural Area is sometimes forgotten by birders\, yet it offers excellent birding–especially during migration. This small section of Middle Run Natural Area provides the hedgerows and early-successional habitat that migrants like warblers often use during fall migration. The height and arrangement of vegetation here also provide ample opportunities for photography. Grassy and scrubby fields provide great habitat for migrating and overwintering sparrows\, which may start to show up by late September.  \n\n\n\nWill Krohn will lead a walk for approximately 1.5 hours in this park\, walking on grassy trails over gently to mildly sloping terrain. We will travel about a mile\, slowly walking around to look for mixed-species flocks\, botanizing along the way if the birds are quiet. We will meet at 8:00 AM at the grassy field where Polly Drummond Hill Road meets Smith Mill Road. You can park in this field\, but remember to drive slowly when entering the field from the road\, as there is a big bump here that low-clearance cars should be careful of.
