Join us for a special evening celebrating Delaware Bird-a-Thon’s 20 years of conservation success in person only at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science! \n\n\n\nDOS Members will need to RSVP to the email that will be sent to them shortly before the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Prime Hook to Passmore Farm\, DOS Conservation Chair Matt Sarver will share a “where they are now” of the lands Bird-a-Thon has acquired and their impact on conservation in Delaware. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur keynote speaker\, Autumn-Lynn Harrison \, is a Research Ecologist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center\, where she manages the Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective\, which brings together the knowledge of agencies\, universities\, nonprofits\, and community scientists to advance shorebird conservation in the Western Hemisphere. Scientists tracking shorebirds with electronic tags across the Western Hemisphere have shared data from over 3\,000 individual birds representing over 30 species that can be combined with survey and community science data to support the science needs of interested groups working to conserve and manage shorebirds and their habitats. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll hear a video message from John Fitzpatrick\, retired Director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and longtime Bird-a-Thon donor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKat Christie from the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife will update us on Delaware’s shorebird populations and the impact of our work on the Bayshore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will recognize Senator Stephanie Hansen with the DOS Conservation Award for her work on habitat and species conservation\, especially the landmark freshwater wetlands protections she championed this year! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA special signed\, limited print run of Liz Clayton Fuller’s magnificent Red Knot painting (the basis for the Delaware shorebird license plate) will be unveiled and offered for purchase. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlus Bird-a-Thon awards for the 2026 teams\, door prizes\, and more! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting is held IN PERSON ONLY at Delaware Museum of Nature and Science. DESCRIPTION:Purple Finch by Carolyn Holland \n\n\n\nExplore this under-birded park to see what species we might find!\n\n\n\nAnson B. Nixon park (www.ansonbnixonpark.org) is an attractive 100 acre site owned by the Kennett Area Park Authority. It contains two small lakes and a mix of woodland and dense forest with creeks. It is free to enter\, there is ample parking and the trails are good. We will search the woods and edges for late migrants\, winter visitors and residents. This well-maintained park is under-birded yet the mix of habitats holds great promise of us adding some new species to the site list! SUMMARY:DOS November Meeting:  "Birds Up Close - Fantastic Feathers\, Form and Function" by Professor Lorna Gison\, Department of Materials Science and Engineering\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Lorna Gibson’s new book\, Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders\, draws on her experience as a professor of engineering at MIT and as a lifelong birder\, to describe how birds work from an engineering perspective. Feathers\, bones\, bills\, eggs\, flight: all come in for scrutiny\, sometimes at the microscopic scale\, sometimes at a more macroscopic scale. In this talk\, Lorna will share highlights from the book on how the microscopic structure of feathers gives rise to their remarkable properties. \n\n\n\nFor instance\, feathers give birds their color\, from the bright red of a male Cardinal to the iridescent reds and greens of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Feathers keep birds warm and dry: down provides excellent insulation against heat loss\, and water really does roll off a duck’s back. Feathers form the aerodynamic shape of the wing\, enabling flight. A Barn Owl’s flight feathers suppress sound\, allowing it to fly nearly silently\, while its ruff feathers reflect and focus sound into its ears\, enabling the owl to hunt in total darkness by sound alone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Lorna Gibson is the Matoula S Salapatas Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow\, MIT’s top award for undergraduate teaching. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Audubon Society. She has always loved nature and getting outside to walk\, bicycle and bird. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting is held IN PERSON ONLY at Delaware Museum of Nature and Science. SUMMARY:Delaware Bayshore:  Pickering Beach to Port Mahon with Anthony Gonzon
DESCRIPTION:Sunset along Port Mahon Road by Chris Bennett \n\n\n\nObservation Tower at Little Creek Wildlife Area by C. Bennett\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpend the afternoon on the Delaware Bay!\n\n\n\nThe Delaware Bay and the public lands along its shores attract a wide range of migrant and winter resident birds.  We will start the trip at the Main Tract of Little Creek Wildlife area looking for forest songbirds\, raptors and waterfowl.  We will head south from there to Pickering Beach to search for diving ducks on the bay and check the tidal flats for winter gulls.  The trip will end on the fishing pier at Port Mahon where we will scan the marsh for American Bittern\, Rough-legged Hawk and Short-eared Owls.  Conservation Access Pass required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLesser Black-backed Gulls\,  immature & adult by C. Will arrive at Forsythe around 8 am and drive the auto tour (National Wildlife Refuge pass required per car) looking for waterfowl and winter raptors. We”ll then drive an hour north to Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island to catch the afternoon sun to see Harlequin Ducks\, Eiders and Alcids. DESCRIPTION:Bobolink by Ian Stewart \n\n\n\nSee Bobolinks up close!\n\n\n\nWe will explore the rolling grasslands of Fair Hill NRMA just over the Maryland border in search of breeding Bobolinks and Meadowlarks\, then head into the woods in search of other breeding birds. Fair Hill is an excellent place to see these declining grassland birds thanks to local conservation efforts. SUMMARY:49th Annual Beginner's Shorebird Field Trip!
DESCRIPTION:Shorebirds for Beginners at Bombay Hook!\n\n\n\nDelaware Ornithological Society (DOS) is sponsoring a Beginner’s Shorebird Field Trip on Saturday\, July 17th\, at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge\, Smyrna\, Delaware. This will be a Half Day trip – tailored for beginners\, and is the 49th consecutive outing for this popular field trip. “Par” is 15 species of shorebirds\, usually a challenging goal\, because arrival dates\, water levels and weather conditions all change year to year.  \n\n\n\nPectoral Sandpiper by Carolyn Holland\n\n\n\nEmphasis is on basics of shorebird identification for beginners\, although there are always several experienced birders to assist. Pace is slow – everyone should see each shorebird species satisfactorily. While this is not a photography workshop\, our slow pace allows for photographic experimentation and networking. There will be some “prizes” awarded for categories not yet determined! Drinks and snacks advised\, as well as sunscreen\, bug spray and a hat. An optional\, informal tally luncheon is usually held following the trip at a local eatery.  \n\n\n\nRefuge fees are in effect – $4 per car\, or free entry with a 2026-2027 season duck stamp (or other special passes). This would be a fine opportunity to recycle your lightly used\, expired prior season duck stamp(s) – Donate it/them to support the DOS Bird-a-Thon!  \n\n\n\nTrip leader is Bob Rufe – rrufe1@aol.com – please email Bob to let him know you’re planning to participate\, or if you have any questions.  A few “loaner” binoculars will be available\, please contact leader to request if needed.More information on Bombay Hook NWR is available at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Bombay_Hook/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet in the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center parking lot in Smyrna\, DE at 8 a.m. and wrap up by noon.
