Large Gull Workshop

Up Close and Personal With Gulls

If you have ever been on one of Mike Smith’s Cherry Island gull trips, you quickly learn to admire his ability to sort through thousands of gulls for that one standout or unusual individual.  After he locates it, the group participants through scopes and binoculars view the gull talking leg color, malt, plumage markings (or lack of them) to settle in on the most probable identification.  Yes, gull identification can be challenging; but, with a little study, it can also be very rewarding.

Periodically, DOS offers Large Gull Identification Workshops in conjunction with the Delaware Museum of Natural History (DMNH).  Our intent is to offer workshop participants the opportunity to view, study and discuss the skins of a variety of large gulls one might see in our eastern region. Those skins include both the common and the unusual and may also include regional subspecies. Dr. Jean Woods, Curator of Birds at the DMNH, guides us through the museum’s collections.

The workshops are free and are offerred at the Delaware Museum of Natural History.  Space is limited and registration is required.  If you’re interested in attending a Large Gull workshop, please contact Jean Woods, jwoods@delmnh.org or 302-658-9111 x314.
