DOS Conservation
Cats Indoors! Campaign for Safer Birds & Cats

Cats are a major threat to wildlife, particularly birds, where they are allowed to roam freely. Free-roaming cats are also at much greater risk of illness and serious injury. The American Bird Conservancy (ABC) has issued a Resolution on Free-roaming Cats which calls for pet cats to be spayed/neutered and kept indoors, and for feral cats to be humanely removed.

The DOS has voted in Council to support the position of the ABC regarding owned and feral cats. To learn more about this important issue, visit their website. The ABC has also put together a brochure which nicely summarizes the many arguments in favor of keeping domestic cats indoors. Use the points raised in the brochure to convince skeptical friends and neighbors to keep their cats indoors!

The Conservation Committee works collaboratively with many organizations concerned with bird conservation at the local, national, and international levels. DOS  members can stay informed about conservation issues which concern them through the DOS Flyer newsletter, monthly meetings, the DE Birds on-line discussion group, and this web site. We encourage you to become involved in conservation and the DOS!
